The first high school football practice in Las Vegas occurred at an unlikely hour again this summer. And, in a city known for its bright lights, Spring Valley High’s annual midnight practice included one amazing view. As the team of 40-plus players raced onto the field Thursday morning at 12:01 — the first minute Nevada teams could officially practice — in one of the great local gridiron traditions, they did so with a backdrop fitting for a postcard.

Spring Valley prepared all week for the vaunted rushing attack of Durango’s Julio Mora and Donovan Smith. So, it caught the Grizzlies a bit off guard when much of the Trailblazers game plan revolved around moving the ball through the air with quarterback Chase Roberts.

Spring Valley kicker Diyan Nedelchev kicked two second-half field goals, including one of 34 yards in the fourth quarter, to help the Grizzlies to victory.

Late in Friday night’s Sunset Regional quarterfinal, Legacy quarterback Devin Weidemann dropped back to pass. He rolled to the left, looked to the right, felt pressure from behind and unleashed a high, arching 60-yard pass. “I just cocked back and fired it,” he said. “And I had my doubts.”
