Farrell Victor has been waiting all year for someone to punt the ball in his direction. The Las Vegas High senior finally got his chance Thursday in one of the Wildcats’ most important football games of the season, returning a punt 59 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter of “Bone Game” against visiting Rancho to help the Wildcats win for the 16th straight time in the rivalry, 49-12. The third-ranked team in the Sun’s top-10 rankings will be involved in one of the most anticipated games this week. It’s rivalry week on the local high school gridiron, starting Thursday night when No. 3 Las Vegas High attempts to extend its winning streak against Rancho in the annual Bone Game to 16 straight seasons.

D.J. Pumphrey rushed for more than 250 yards as Canyon Springs shrugged off a lackadaisical first half to beat Rancho 26-6. The Pioneers made multiple mistakes in the opening 24 minutes and turned the ball over continually. They only led 6-0 at halftime.

Rancho is getting healthy and improving. After starting the season with three disappointing losses, the Rams have now won two straight. Rancho defeated Chaparral on Saturday 44-12.

Valley coach Marcus Sherman wasn’t planning on getting much sleep Friday night. He couldn’t imagine doing anything other than thinking about his team’s 35-34 victory over Rancho. The Vikings won one of the more memorable high school football games in Southern Nevada history in five overtimes.

It’s been an emotional past week for Basic High. Before the Wolves began preparing for Friday’s matchup with Rancho, they learned 2009 team captain Kelly Armistead was severely injured and suffered major head injuries in a car accident last Saturday.

Eldorado High football coach Vernon Brown doesn’t hesitate endorsing his quarterback as the state’s best. It’s just that JaQuorrey Williams, a three-year starter for the Sundevils, is also one of the state’s best-kept secrets. With Eldorado struggling for victories the past two years, Williams’ solid performances have gone virtually unnoticed. Come Friday, that will likely change — at least for a few hours.
