It hasn’t been the most memorable of seasons for Del Sol, but at least it got to end the season on a high note. The Dragons earned their first victory of the season, beating Eldorado, 28-20. “Even though the losses mounted, we got better each week,” first-year Del Sol coach Gary Maki said. “We weren’t finishing games, but we gained confidence."

Foothill quarterback Drew Doxtator and wide receiver David Persi displayed fabulous chemistry Thursday. Doxtator found Persi for five touchdowns, leading the Falcons to a 42-18 victory over Eldorado. “David is a good enough athlete to finish catches,” Foothill coach Marty Redmond said. “We were a little bit sloppy at times, but we got it going when we needed to.”

On Thursday, two days before Vernon Brown’s Eldorado High football team opens the season with the Cleat Game rivalry against Chaparral, the coach was asked about playing in one of Nevada’s most storied games. He just didn’t want to look that far ahead. “It’s a big game, of course, and we want to get the cleat back,” he said. “But we are taking it one day at a time this year. I’m worried about today’s practice. It’s Thursday. Let’s worry about Saturday then.”

Coronado will be well rested and ready when takes the field again next week. On Friday night at Eldorado High, Coronado led 28-0 at halftime of an eventual 35-7 victory and coach Brad Talich sat his starters for the second half.
