Mojave made history in more ways than one Friday night. Not only did the Rattlers host the first playoff game in school history, they also won it. For the second time this season, Mojave beat Desert Pines.

The Moapa Valley High football team has reached the state title game the past six years. If the second quarter of Friday’s 49-20 victory against host Desert Pines is any indication, the Pirates are in the driver’s seat for a return trip to the title game.

Walking up and down the Desert Pines High football team’s sideline Friday night during their 48-28 victory against Chaparral, it was obvious the Jaguars players had a different attitude. The Jaguars, after struggling to start the season, are a confident a bunch. And that makes them one of Division-IA’s most dangerous teams.

Malik Davis can sometimes get lost behind the considerable shadows of Eric Wilkes and Iquan Corsey in the Desert Pines backfield. Not on Friday. With Corsey missing the game and the Jaguars needing someone to make up for the absence, Davis had his best game of the season in a 41-28 home triumph over Virgin Valley.

Midway through the third quarter Friday night, Mojave was exactly where everyone thought it would be against Desert Pines. The Rattlers trailed 18-6, looking destined to fall against a more established opponent for the umpteenth in the last decade.

If there was any doubt Cheyenne High is the team to beat in the new Division I-A, senior running back Myloe Lewis erased those concerns Thursday in the opening two minutes of the Desert Shields’ first game. Lewis rushed for a 55-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Then, after a Desert Pines interception, he scored on a 23-yard run in making a big-time opening-night statement. Lewis rushed for 343 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries in leading visiting Cheyenne to a 30-22 victory.

Every high school football player has a different story to share on national signing day. There are usually plenty of tears of joy, smiles and hugs from loved ones, and the look of relief on the faces of recruits as they officially commit to a college by signing a letter of intent. Getting to the day, which always falls on the first Wednesday of February, is typically easier said than done for the athletes. Two of Southern Nevada’s top college football recruits will be playing in national all-star games in the upcoming weeks. Desert Pines High senior offensive tackle Cedrick Poutasi will play Dec. 30 in the Offense-Defense All-America Game at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Even a flu virus and rainy conditions couldn’t stop Foothill High sophomore quarterback Drew Doxtator from winning his first playoff game. Doxtator threw four touchdowns Friday to help the host Falcons advance to the Sunrise Regional semifinals with a 34-12 victory against Desert Pines in the regional quarterfinals.
