So much for a letdown from Bishop Gorman after it started the season with two nationally ranked foes. The Gaels looked as impressive as ever in its state opener Friday night, shutting down last year’s Southwest Division runner-up Desert Oasis by a 52-0 margin.

No team in Las Vegas returns more battle-tested players than Desert Oasis. The Diamondbacks, who have made the playoffs in each of the last two years, have 16 starters back — eight on offense and eight on defense. Cheyenne and Desert Oasis highs last week were supposed to give the state’s best football teams a competitive game. Instead, they lost by a combined 105-6. Yes, Bishop Gorman and Palo Verde are that much better than the rest of the teams in their league.
