Long touchdowns from Chris Marshall carry Del Sol to victory

Chris Marshall isn't your prototypical Del Sol High running back. But don't let his 5-foot-7, 160-pound frame fool you. After his performance Thursday night in a 31-16 victory against Canyon Springs, he appears to be in line to be the next great Dragon rusher.

Durango rallies from behind to beat Del Sol, 21-14

Durango High quarterback Chase Roberts remembers the defeats. He remembers walking onto the football field and quickly realizing his team wasn’t going to win. But he also remembers then first-year coach Gary Maki preaching about how the Trailblazers would one day be one of the Las Vegas Valley’s top teams. That day came Friday.

Defending Sunrise champion Del Sol looks to continue winning ways
Monday, August 23, 2010
Fresh off its Sunrise Regional title and state runner-up finish last fall, Del Sol High football coach Preston Goroff knows duplicating the magical playoff run will be easier said than done. The Dragons, which fell 62-21 to Bishop Gorman in the state title game, have gone from a team relatively under the radar to a team the opposition will by gunning for. And, just like last year, they will struggle with depth — seven players are projected to start both ways. “Obviously the bar was raised a little bit,” Goroff said. “The expectations are high and we know it. Coronado QB, Del Sol tailback lead Sunrise to all-star victory

prep football:
Coronado High’s RJ Newton was one of the Las Vegas Valley’s most prolific quarterbacks last fall. His strong performances, however, went virtually unnoticed because Coronado finished with a 3-6 record and failed to win a league game. Newton finally got to compete on a big stage Saturday. He didn’t disappoint.

Gorman assistants follow Sanchez from California for championship run

prep football:
The excitement in Tony Sanchez’s voice was all it took to sell Garrett Johnson on the idea of moving to Southern Nevada to coach high school football. It was a leap of faith of sorts, considering Johnson would have to move his family from their native Northern California and didn’t have a job lined up in Las Vegas. But coaching alongside Sanchez was too good of an opportunity to pass on

Del Sol players savor experience of championship game

So close, yet so far away. There was Del Sol senior linebacker Curt Pfeiffer, lying face down on the Sam Boyd Stadium turf with his arms outstretched after lunging for an interception. The ball had fallen just inches short of Pfeiffer’s grip, but had the senior never hustled to corral the tipped ball, he would have never had the opportunity to make the play. “Two inches from my hand,” Pfeiffer said, holding up two fingers. “Two inches.”

Grimble, Palelei and Turner started for both championship teams
For 24 years, Bishop Gorman failed to win a state championship in football. After Gorman’s 62-21 victory against Del Sol Saturday, the Gaels have won two in three years with the school’s class of 2010 impacting both. “I just got chills down the side of my back when you said that,” senior linebacker Evan Palelei said.

Minutes before the Del Sol High football team started its Monday afternoon practice, a maintenance worker was busy painting lines on the Dragons’ field. Del Sol was preparing for its first appearance in the state championship game. The worker, however, was transforming the football field into a soccer field in preparation for the upcoming girls soccer season. In most years, the change would have been right on schedule. But, then again, this isn’t like most years.

Tim Wilkinson doesn’t need the attention and doesn’t care about the accolades. The only recognition the Bishop Gorman High senior defensive tackle needs will come on Saturday when the Gaels play in the large-school state championship football game against Del Sol.

Del Sol's silent leader primed for state championship
Friday, December 4, 2009
PREP FOOTBALL:
Evan Weinstock isn’t the typical high school football standout. Although he’s Del Sol’s leader on the field, Weinstock is not known for fiery speeches. Heck, Weinstock barely even talks. “I didn’t even know he was on the team his sophomore year because he barely spoke three words,” Del Sol coach Preston Goroff said.
