Niko Kapeli set the school record for rushing yards as Liberty flew past Coronado Friday night 62-25. Kapeli rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He received the bulk of the work at running back with Ty Byrd missing his second straight game with a sore knee.

The Coronado High football team had one Southeast Division win in the last two years entering its home game Thursday against perennial league power Basic. But sophomore wide receiver Cody Mucino had three touchdowns for the Cougars, including 24-yard scoring strike with less than 30 seconds to play in helping the Cougars force overtime. That’s where kicker Brock Morrison’s 47-yard field goal gave the Cougars that signature win they were looking for, a 30-27 victory.

Coronado High football coach Lance Cooper has only been on the job since the middle of the summer, but he’s already found several positives with the program. His optimism can be credited to enthusiasm the players have displayed. “You couldn’t ask for a better group of kids,” Cooper said. “Hopefully we can give this program direction and get it going the right way.”

The Coronado High football team will have its fourth head coach in as many years when it opens the season in late August. Todd Stratton resigned Friday to accept a position as a junior college offensive coordinator in California.

Coronado High’s RJ Newton was one of the Las Vegas Valley’s most prolific quarterbacks last fall. His strong performances, however, went virtually unnoticed because Coronado finished with a 3-6 record and failed to win a league game. Newton finally got to compete on a big stage Saturday. He didn’t disappoint.

PREP FOOTBALL RECRUITING:
It didn’t take much for Liberty High senior wide receiver Anthony Norris to be convinced he could flourish on the Southern Utah football team. Norris took his recruiting trip to the Cedar City, Utah, school this weekend and had a chance to visit with Thunderbirds receiver Tysson Poots, who shined at Coronado High in Henderson.

Running back Dezerick Reed has been the Del Sol High football team’s No. 1 option offensively every game this fall. But in one of the Dragons’ most important games of the season on Friday night, they had to rally without their top performer. Reed was benched after drawing a personal foul on a late hit in the second quarter against a player from visiting Coronado.
Liberty beats Coronado 24-19, headed to playoffs for first time

Liberty led the entire way and held off a late Coronado surge to win 24-19 in its final divisional game of the season. Sam Tai ran for a 50-yard touchdown to give Liberty a 7-0 halftime lead. Receiver Anthony Norris starred in the second half with a long touchdown reception.

The last time Chris Smith and Ian Ross played on opposing teams, it didn’t go so well. Ross, a junior defensive back for Coronado High, and Smith, Ross’ adoptive brother and junior quarterback/receiver at Liberty, have played on the same teams their entire lives — except once.

Coronado (3-5) has not put together an ideal season, but Friday made up for some of its struggles. The Cougars destroyed Chaparral in a 53-0 victory.
