As soon as Shawn Dupris arrived at the Damonte Ranch High School campus in southeast Reno, the football coach knew he had found a long-term home. A native of South Dakota, Dupris immediately felt that small-town feel he believes helps define high school football. Dupris, who last fall coached Bonanza High in Las Vegas to a 7-3 record and a playoff berth, didn’t have to think long two weeks ago when offered the Damonte Ranch heading coaching position.

Coronado notches best record since 2007 with win against Virgin Valley

Coronado closed its season on a high note Thursday by defeating visiting Virgin Valley 36-16. Senior running back Chris Johnson rushed for three touchdowns in the victory and led Coronado to one of its best offensive outputs of the year.

Aaron Love rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries Saturday night to lead the Green Valley High football team to a 45-28 victory against visiting Coronado. The win is Green Valley’s fourth straight, improving their record to 3-0 in the Southeast Division.

This was seemingly the worst possible way Friday’s game could start for Basic. A week after getting torched on the ground in a loss to Green Valley, Basic allowed Coronado’s Nate Webb to break a 70-yard touchdown run on its first possession.

It was the break the Coronado High football team was looking for. The Cougars, who had a new coach for the third straight season and weren’t expected to be competitive, opened Southeast Division play last fall by upsetting one of the league’s powers in a 30-27 victory against Basic. For one night, it appeared Coronado, which went didn’t win a game in league play the year before, was going to challenge for a playoff spot.

When he was a senior at Coronado High in 2005-06, Poots had two options for continuing his football career — walking on at UNLV to play in the secondary or taking his lone full-scholarship offer to play wide receiver at Southern Utah, a Football Championship Subdivision school.

Niko Kapeli set the school record for rushing yards as Liberty flew past Coronado Friday night 62-25. Kapeli rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He received the bulk of the work at running back with Ty Byrd missing his second straight game with a sore knee.
