high school football: Coronado takes second place in the Southeast division for best finish in nine years
No one could blame Coronado senior Chris Laliberte for struggling to come up with the words to describe his team’s 24-20 victory over Basic. Before Friday night, the receiver/kicker had never caught a touchdown pass. He scored all three of the Cougars' touchdowns against the Wolves.

There’s a new team in the Sun’s ranking this week: Coronado. Yes, Coronado. Coronado, which hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2005 and is typically the worst team in the Southeast League, was that impressive in a 41-17 win against Silverado.

Kevin Lucero and Jackson Cofer hooked up for a pair of first-half touchdown passes Thursday to lead the host Coronado High football team to a 41-17 season-opening victory against Silverado. Lucero passed for five touchdowns and rushed for another, and the Cougars started fast in leading 34-0 at halftime.

The improvements the Coronado High football team made toward the end of last season were obvious. Instead of suffering ugly defeats in the tough Southeast League, the Cougars were more than competitive in giving several perennial playoff-qualifiers a competitive game.

As soon as Shawn Dupris arrived at the Damonte Ranch High School campus in southeast Reno, the football coach knew he had found a long-term home. A native of South Dakota, Dupris immediately felt that small-town feel he believes helps define high school football. Dupris, who last fall coached Bonanza High in Las Vegas to a 7-3 record and a playoff berth, didn’t have to think long two weeks ago when offered the Damonte Ranch heading coaching position.

Coronado closed its season on a high note Thursday by defeating visiting Virgin Valley 36-16. Senior running back Chris Johnson rushed for three touchdowns in the victory and led Coronado to one of its best offensive outputs of the year.

Silverado’s Deandre Gause scored on a 30-yard pass from Savon Moniuz in the second quarter Thursday and the Skyhawks defense did the rest in a 7-0 victory against visiting Coronado.
