When the Sun released its preseason high school football rankings last month, several readers emailed asking why schools such as Cheyenne and Moapa Valley high didn’t crack the top 10. The general consensus was they were two of the top teams in Southern Nevada but were excluded from the rankings because they compete in the newly formed Division 1-A.

The Duel in the Desert high school football trophy is staying at Cheyenne. Cheyenne’s Myloe Lewis had a rushing and receiving touchdown Friday, leading the Desert Shields to a 26-19 victory against host Cimarron-Memorial in the annual rivalry game. The two schools opened together in 1991 and have played every year for the trophy.

If there was any doubt Cheyenne High is the team to beat in the new Division I-A, senior running back Myloe Lewis erased those concerns Thursday in the opening two minutes of the Desert Shields’ first game. Lewis rushed for a 55-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Then, after a Desert Pines interception, he scored on a 23-yard run in making a big-time opening-night statement. Lewis rushed for 343 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries in leading visiting Cheyenne to a 30-22 victory.

Cheyenne High football coach David Cochran frequently delivers a similar message to the players on his team: Championships are won on the field, not the Internet.
