COMMUNITY: In the afternoon, Hunkie Cooper works on football skills. But most of his day is spent helping students deal with life.
If you think you know how a high school football coach spends his day, you’ve never met the likes of Hunkie Cooper, whose contributions to high school students extend far beyond the gridiron. Most of his school day is spent as site coordinator for the nonprofit Communities in Schools, which provides community support to students so they will succeed in school and in life.

Football:
One projection generously has wide receiver Juron Criner being selected in the first round of next week’s NFL Draft. A majority of the others have him being picked in the mid-to-late rounds. But Criner, a 2008 graduate of Canyon Springs High School, doesn’t spend much time worrying about what the so-called experts think.

Basic High running back Lorenzo Sampson delivered a simple message Friday when addressing teammates following their 42-21 victory against host Canyon Springs in the Sunrise Regional quarterfinals. Sampson, the Wolves unquestioned team leader, didn’t hesitate telling teammates to seize the moment the rest of the postseason.

This time, the Canyon Springs High football team’s 2-point conversion attempt was successful. The Pioneers’ Donnel Pumphrey ended the game Thursday night by scoring on a 2-point conversion in overtime to give Canyon Springs a dramatic 22-21 victory in overtime against Las Vegas High for the Northeast Division title. Trailing 21-14 after Las Vegas scored on its possession in overtime, Pumphrey brought Canyon Springs to within one point when he scored on a 1-yard run on a fourth down play. The Canyon Springs High football team remained undefeated in Northeast Division play Friday with a 21-14 victory against host Valley.

Canyon Springs remained undefeated in Northeast Division play by beating visiting Eldorado 50-0 Friday night. The Pioneers have now won five straight after starting the season 0-2. Canyon Springs coach Hunkie Cooper is starting to see the growth he’s expected all season from his team.

D.J. Pumphrey rushed for more than 250 yards as Canyon Springs shrugged off a lackadaisical first half to beat Rancho 26-6. The Pioneers made multiple mistakes in the opening 24 minutes and turned the ball over continually. They only led 6-0 at halftime.

The only thing Canyon Springs coach Hunkie Cooper asks for out of his team is to get better each week. He thinks the Pioneers have done that, as they improved 2-2 on the year with a 56-6 victory over Chaparral on Friday night.

high school football: Despite starting 10 sophomores on defense, Pioneers are getting better every week
Canyon Springs High football coach Hunkie Cooper never hesitated when making this decision. After watching his freshman team leisurely dominant the competition last fall, he decided to have a majority of the underclassmen skip the junior varsity ranks this year and play on the varsity level.

Talk about a baptism by fire. The Canyon Springs High football team will regularly play 15 to 18 sophomores this fall, with the group of first-time varsity performers getting their initial taste of action under the Friday night lights against one of the state’s perennial powers. Palo Verde, which has one regular season loss in the last four years, will be the first test for a group of younger players Pioneers coach Hunkie Cooper feels are up to the challenge.

Jamaal Martin thought his football career was coming to an end. Martin, a senior quarterback at Canyon Springs High in North Las Vegas, knew he had the talent to play at the next level. He just wasn’t being recruited. That’s when Pioneers’ coach Hunkie Cooper got involved, sending game film and making phone calls to literally hundreds of schools to promote his player. Finally, he found a college coach who saw the same upside in the 6-foot-2, 175-pound Martin that he did.
