A massive upset helped usher in the first week of high school football Friday night. Bonanza, which went 5-5 last season and lost its top two standouts, stunned visiting Silverado, one of the more highly touted teams coming into the season, 30-29.

Offensive line is a strength for Bonanza

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:
More than remnants remain from a Bonanza offense that flew through the season last year to the tune of 38 points per game. Although the Bengals lost their top skill players who received credit for the gaudy statistics, they return most of the offensive line that made the success possible.

Even though Durango High football team held a 54-28 halftime lead Saturday against host Bonanza, coach Gary Maki didn’t feel the lead was safe. “I didn’t feel comfortable pulling my starters out after that first half,” Maki said. “The first half was just a track meet with points being scored.” Durango, however, was the only team that continued to score in the second half, prevailing 74-28 in the Southwest Division opener for both schools.

Almost no one found a way to slow Bonanza’s offense last season. The Bengals scored 29 points per game behind nearly 1,300 yards rushing from DaSean Martin and nearly 1,500 yards passing from Sterling Sprau.
