high school football: First-year coach Brad Talich getting the most out of team that hadn't been to playoffs since 2005
The Coronado High football team won two league games the past three seasons. However, that was an old era of Cougars football, before first-year coach Brad Talich took over the program. With Talich leading the way, Coronado is having its best season since the school opened in 2001. That season is going to last at least one more week. Coronado’s Derrick Keller had a pair of touchdown runs Friday night against host Green Valley in the Sunrise Regional semifinals, and the Cougars defense was stingy for most of the night in a 29-14 victory.

high school football: The star junior running back rushes for more than 200 yards, three touchdowns to help Gorman score 71 points against rival Palo Verde
The best rivalry in all of Nevada’s high school football was a lopsided affair Friday night. That was especially true when Bishop Gorman High junior running back Nate Starks had the ball in his hands. Starks showed why he is considered one of the nation’s top recruiting prospects for the class of 2014, rushing for 201 yards on 10 carries with three touchdowns to give the Gaels a 71-28 victory against Summerlin neighbor Palo Verde in the Sunset Regional semifinals.

Green Valley tops Foothill for spot in Sunrise semifinals
Friday, November 9, 2012

It took the Green Valley High football team about one quarter Friday to get comfortable playing postseason football. The Northeast League champion Gators, which start a sophomore quarterback and have several underclassmen at other key positions, trailed visiting Foothill 7-0 in the Sunrise Regional quarterfinals after surrendering touchdown on the first series of the game. They wouldn’t be scored on again until the fourth quarter, however, recording an easy 43-14 victory in advance to next week’s semifinals against Coronado.

Friday night roundup: Gorman, Palo not the only game in town
Friday, November 9, 2012

Chris Laliberte scores all of Coronado's points in comeback win over Basic

high school football: Coronado takes second place in the Southeast division for best finish in nine years
No one could blame Coronado senior Chris Laliberte for struggling to come up with the words to describe his team’s 24-20 victory over Basic. Before Friday night, the receiver/kicker had never caught a touchdown pass. He scored all three of the Cougars' touchdowns against the Wolves.

Risk before halftime pays off for Palo Verde in playoff win, helps set up showdown with Gorman
Saturday, November 3, 2012
high schooll football:
Palo Verde High football coach Darwin Rost could have been conservative and attempted a field goal Friday at the end of the first half against visiting Legacy in the Sunset Regional quarterfinals. The Panthers were at the Legacy 3-yard line with about five seconds remaining before halftime, giving them enough time to run one play. A short field goal would have given them a three-point halftime lead, while going for a touchdown came with the risk of no points and allowing underdog Legacy to gain confidence it could pull off the upset. Rost’s gamble paid off. His son, junior quarterback ...
