When Legacy High’s Casey Hughes contemplated which college football program to attend, he just couldn’t pass on the University of Utah. And while the defensive back and kick returner’s comfort with the coaching staff and where he envisions himself fitting in on the team were key factors, it wasn’t the most important reason. He verbally committed today.

As UNLV offensive lineman Ron Scoggins Jr. left practice Tuesday, a familiar face greeted him: his father. Ron Scoggins Sr. was part of UNLV’s 1984 California Bowl championship team, so father and son will enter the program’s record book when the Rebels play in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Moapa Valley High two-way lineman Mat McDermand committed to UNR football following an official trip over the weekend, Pirates coach Brent Lewis said. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound McDermand also had scholarship offers from UNLV, UTEP, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona and Dartmouth. He visited UNLV two weekend ago.

A high school football tradition in Las Vegas is changing this year for the better, according to organizers. The West Charleston Lions Club Charity All-Star Football Game is 5 p.m. Saturday at Bishop Gorman’s Fertitta Field, moving to a December date after more than 40 years of playing in early June.

Liberty's Tyler Newman passed for 3,983 yards and 42 touchdowns in leading the Patriots to their fourth straight Sunrise Regional title. Last week, he was honored for his sensational season, being selected as Nevada’s Gatorade Player of the Year. “It was an amazing year. Everything clicked after that first game,” Newman said.

Randall Cunningham II was the star of the Division I state championship today against Reed of Sparks, rushing for 213 yards and four TDs on 23 carries, and completing 9 of 11 passes for 111 yards and a TD to lead the Gaels to a 49-14 victory.

The Bishop Gorman High football team is the last team standing — for the fifth straight season. Randall Cunningham II accounted for five touchdowns today for the Gaels, leading them to a 48-14 victory against Reed of Sparks in the Division-I state championship game at Sam Boyd Stadium.

When Gorman takes on Reed High of Northern Nevada at 1:07 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium for the Division-I state championship, it will be playing to become the first large-school classification team in more than 80 years to win five straight titles. Reno High from 1924-28 was the last team with five consecutive crowns.

After one of the first plays of the Bishop Gorman High football season, it didn’t appear defense — specifically, run defense — would become one of the strengths this fall for the Nevada power. Yet, when the Gaels take the field at 1:07 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium in the Division I state championship game against Reed High of Northern Nevada, it will be playing for a fifth straight championship largely because the defense has been downright dominant.

It took less than 90 seconds today in the Sunset Regional high school football championship game for Bishop Gorman High to make a statement against visiting Palo Verde. The four-time defending state champion Gaels showed they were going to be able to run the ball at will, using a 5-yard touchdown run from Russell Booze to cap a five-play, 73-yard drive to give Gorman the lead for good. Daniel Stewart had a 9-yard touchdown run for Bishop Gorman with 2:48 to play in the third quarter for a 31-0 lead against Palo Verde in the state semifinals. In the other semifinal, Reed took a 28-24 lead after Liberty went ahead 24-21 on Tyler Newman's 45-yard TD pass to Drew Hladek with nine minutes remaining.
