It’s time to remove the ‘underdog’ label when describing the Green Valley High basketball team. The Gators, after all, are one of four teams still playing in the state’s large-school classification.
When the Foothill High basketball team scored just four points Thursday in the second quarter of its Sunrise Regional semifinal game against defending state champion Canyon Springs, the Falcons’ players could have easily become frustrated. But they didn’t. That’s especially true for senior guard Greg Cox, who despite being one of the best 3-point shooters in Southern Nevada, misfired on several long-range attempts in the quarter.
The Foothill High basketball team will be at an advantage for the rest of the Sunrise Regional playoffs. Foothill is the host site for the final two rounds of the tournament, giving the Southeast Division champion Falcons a leg up on other remaining teams. Foothill beat visiting Desert Pines 80-62 Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
In a league with four equally matched teams fighting for supremacy, the Foothill High basketball squad created separation from the pack Friday in the final eight minutes of the regular season. The Falcons outscored visiting Silverado 24-8 in the fourth quarter of a 74-53 win to force a four-way first place tie in the Southeast Division.
Las Vegas High basketball coach Jason Wilson couldn’t have asked for a better nonleague game for his team to play in. The Wildcats are one of three Southern Nevada public schools scheduled to play national power Findlay Prep, facing off against the Henderson-based team Dec. 17 at the South Point Arena. Findlay, which takes players from around the country for its top-caliber team of blue-chip recruits, is in its sixth year of existence at Henderson International School. The Pilots have twice won the ESPN RISE national championship and are regulars in virtually every national ranking
The fate of two seasons came down to one loose ball. With three seconds left in Tuesday’s state tournament play-in game at Del Sol High, Eldorado trailed Sierra Vista by one with Daquon Thrower at the free-throw line shooting his second attempt. Thrower, who swished the first free throw, clanked the shot off the back iron. Teammate D.J. Billingsley came up with the ball after a brief scramble right below the basket. But Sierra Vista’s Dallin Molina stepped up and contested Billingsley’s put back as the buzzer sounded to send the Mountain Lions to Nevada high school basketball’s version of ...
Canyon Springs High guard Trey Evans says it best when describing the play that led to his game-winning shot Thursday in the Sunrise Regional semifinals. “It is not the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog,” said Evans, a 5-foot-11 senior. “I took that mentality with me.” With Canyon Springs trailing Foothill by one point and time quickly ticking off the clock, Evans out-jumped a pair of Foothill defenders in traffic to grab an offensive rebound with about three seconds remaining. He immediately banked the ball off the backboard and ...
The Foothill High basketball team erased an 18-point third quarter deficit Tuesday in rallying for a 68-66 victory against visiting Valley in the Sunrise Regional quarterfinals.
Foothill High junior guard Greg Cox had a game-high 19 points, including draining five 3-pointers, and the Falcons overcame a slow start for a 62-42 victory Friday against host Basic.
Foothill High’s Brannon Cresanto and Greg Cox each hit four 3-point field goals for the Falcons as they improved to 13-6 on the season with a 57-43 victory over Silverado Thursday.
The Coronado High basketball team put this game away in the first quarter. The Cougars opened their Friday game against host Foothill on a 15-0 run and never looked back in a crucial 58-37 Southeast Division victory.
The way coach Kevin Soares sees it, Foothill should dominate inside the paint all year. The Falcons should be one of the bigger teams in the Southeast division behind 6-foot-8 Augy French and 6-foot-6 Zach Ginter in the frontcourt.
