    The top remaining unsigned Las Vegas area high school basketball player for the class of 2013 is off the recruiting board. Bishop Gorman High combo guard Trey Kennedy verbally committed Wednesday to Southern Utah, picking the Cedar City, Utah, school over offers from Eastern Illinois and Fairleigh Dickinson.

    Nigel Williams-Goss, the first four-year player in Findlay Prep basketball history, certainly made his mark on the powerhouse program. The point guard was a McDonald’s All-American this past season and helped Findlay win a pair of ESPN National High School Invitational championships. He contacted the Sun asking if we’d publish a farewell column. He said he couldn’t leave Southern Nevada for the University of Washington without thanking the community. I couldn’t think of someone better to take over my column space. Here’s Nigel in his own words:

    Gorman’s Stephen Zimmerman named sophomore All-American

    Bishop Gorman High basketball player Stephen Zimmerman continues to make a name for himself nationally. Last week, the 6-foot-11 center was named to the Maxpreps Sophomore All-American first-team. Zimmerman dominated the paint for Gorman last season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds per game to help the Gaels win the state championship. He also had 148 blocks.

  • Arbor View’s Justin Burks shines at AAU event, piques recruiting interest

    Justin Burks is becoming Nevada’s most sought-after college basketball recruit for the class of 2014. A junior at Arbor View High, Burks’ rise from a middle-of-the-pack recruit to sure-thing Division I prospect includes shining last weekend at the Pangos Spring Spectacular at Bishop Gorman.

    From the outside looking in, the San Jose State basketball program might not look that attractive. While the Spartans struggled last season in winning just nine games, Bishop Gorman High senior guard Rashad Muhammad knows better days will be ahead. He hopes to be one of the reasons why.

    After church mission, Viko Noma’aea lands scholarship at Utah State

    Viko Noma’aea hadn’t played basketball in more than one year when he returned last month from serving a church mission in France. Come this June, the former Sierra Vista High point guard will start practicing with Utah State, verbally committing to the school this week.

    Shabazz Muhammad is one-and-done at UCLA. The Bishop Gorman High graduate and Pac-12 co-freshman of the year on Tuesday announced the news that had been expected since he arrived in Westwood: He's leaving to enter the NBA draft.

    The Findlay Prep basketball team’s winning streak is over. So is the perennial power Pilots’ season. Findlay Prep was defeated Friday by St. Benedict’s of New Jersey in the semifinals of the ESPN National High School Invitational.

    Findlay Prep’s Nigel Williams-Goss scored 13 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter Thursday and the Pilots erased an eight-point fourth quarter deficit against Montrose Christian in the quarterfinals of the ESPN National High School Invitational in North Bethesda, Md., winning their 54th straight game with a 57-53 victory.

    Findlay Prep basketball coach Todd Simon runs his team like a college football program during this stage of the season. The Henderson-based Pilots, which are the consensus ranked No. 1 high school team in the nation, will have a 35-day layoff between games when they play April 4 against Montrose Christian at the eight-team ESPN National High School Invitational in Bethesda, Md.

    Marcus Allen was named the Nevada’s Gatorade Player of the Year for basketball Thursday, but if you talk with the 6-foot-4 Centennial High senior guard, he’ll tell you something different. He considers Thursday’s announcement a team achievement.

    The first thing visitors see when walking into the coaches’ office at Findlay Prep is an impressive display of McDonald’s All-American jerseys framed and hanging on the walls. The Pilots, which have won three of the last four ESPN National High School Invitational championships, and are ranked No. 1 nationally and undefeated this season, have had seven players selected for the prestigious McDonald’s game in the past five seasons. Nigel Williams-Goss, unlike the other six players before him, didn’t follow the same path in reaching the April 3 game at the United Center in Chicago.

    Local legend Shabazz Muhammad’s farewell tour to college basketball hits Las Vegas this week when his UCLA basketball team plays in the Pac-12 tournament at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The Pac-12 regular season champion Bruins will play a to-be-determined opponent at noon Thursday in the quarterfinals. The tournament begins Wednesday with four games in the first round — the winner of the Stanford-Arizona State matchup advances to face Muhammad and the Bruins.
