This year’s high school football senior all-star game should have a different feel. The West Charleston Lions Club 42nd Annual All-Star Football Game, which is 7 p.m. Saturday at Bishop Gorman, will include a heavy helping of players signed with Division I college programs. Previously, some of those college-bound players were instructed by their future coaches not the play, forcing all-star game organizers into an awkward spot of having to fill roster spots on the week of the game.

high school basketball: Bill Bobier made players better on and off the basketball court, was last high school coach to win four straight titles
Wednesday, May 29, 2013
Valley High basketball coach Bill Bobier had several rules he strictly enforced with his players. One stands out for former star Freddie Banks: If you were going to dunk during a game, you better make it. So, when Banks missed a dunk against Western, he immediately realized there would be a price to pay — even if Banks’ miss was the result of being fouled. Bobier got the most of his players through tough love, winning four straight state championships at Valley from 1980 to '83. Friday, Bobier will receive the most prestigious honor for a local sports figure when ...

Thursday, May 23, 2013
Liberty High incoming senior lineman Jarvis Polu was a mid- to low-level college football recruit most of the spring, receiving scholarship offers from UNLV, UNR, Idaho and Army. Things quickly changed late last week when Wisconsin offered the 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end, immediately changing his status from an under-the-radar prospect to a solid three-star recruit by evaluating site Rivals.com. That’s what happens when a national power from the Big 10 Conference offers a scholarship. Wisconsin, and other Big 10 schools, rarely scout the area.

Bonanza High baseball coach Derek Stafford is having a hard time booking the school’s cafeteria for his team’s end-of-the-year banquet. That’s what happens when your team reaches the state tournament — an event even the Bengals’ coach didn’t expect his team to be playing in. The banquet was initially scheduled for Wednesday, but when the Bengals won the Sunset Regional last week to earn a spot at state, Stafford had a good problem on his hands. The banquet would have to wait.

There is more to high school sports than just winning. It’s about learning to become a reliable teammate, developing lifelong friendships, staying productive and playing for the name on the front of the jersey — that school you grew up following and hoping to one day compete for in a varsity sport. But winning sure makes the experience more memorable. That’s something players on the Chaparral High baseball team can attest to after their Division I-A playoff game Monday.
