10th Annual School Day draws more than 11,000 fans for 51s loss to Albuquerque

The Las Vegas 51s were defeated 8-5 Tuesday by the Albuquerque Isotopes in the final game of a four-game Pacific Coast League series and eight-game homestand at Cashman Field. The early afternoon game was part of the 10th Annual School Day and drew 11,522 fans, 8,800 of whom were area fifth-graders.

One of the key players on the Clark High School basketball team will continue his career next season at a nationally respected junior college. Forward Malcolm Davis signed last week with Coffeyville Community College in Kansas, which was ranked last season.

Reese Havens drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday, forcing home the winning run for the Las Vegas 51s in a 4-3 victory against Albuquerque in the first game of a Pacific Coast League series at Cashman Field.

The UNLV women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday for just the third time in school history. The No. 57 ranked Rebels (20-7) won four of six singles matches against No. 27 Tulsa in the NCAA first round, erasing an early deficit after doubles play for a 4-3 victory and spot in the second round.

Five months ago, Bishop Gorman High rising junior tight end Alize Jones was a relative unknown. Things started to change last December when he burst onto the scene in the state championship game, scoring on touchdown passes of 78 and 10 yards to help Gorman when its fourth straight title. At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, and possessing 4.7-second speed in the 40-yard dash, college recruiters quickly took notice. First, Jones received a scholarship offer from UCLA. Then, Baylor and Vanderbilt followed.
