Did you hear the one about a major league baseball player nearly losing his thumb in an attempt to save a child from an alligator attack in the neighborhood lake? Current Las Vegas 51s outfield David Dellucci sure has. In fact, he invented the tall tale when he accidentally injured his thumb while packing his trailer for Spring Training with the Cleveland Indians this season. Unfortunately for the affable Dellucci, nobody in the Indians organization was laughing a few months into this season when Cleveland demoted a once marquee free agent acquisition to the minors on May 29.

You didn’t have to look far to find Davis Romero on a summer Thursday evening while he was growing up in his native Panama. That’s when the national television station would broadcast a game from Major League Baseball, giving youngsters like Romero a chance to dream of playing on the sport’s biggest stage. Romero remembers being mesmerized by the game, which usually featured the Cleveland Indians because Panama’s Einar Diaz, the Indians’ catcher, was the country’s most popular big-leaguer at the time. Sean Kazmar is no stranger to Cashman Field. As a young fan of the former Las Vegas Stars, Kazmar estimates that he walked into the stadium more than 100 times. But on Tuesday, the former Las Vegas High and College of Southern Nevada star had to stop and ask directions to find the clubhouse entrance to prepare for his Cashman Field debut with the Portland Beavers.

David Purcey envisions pitching like this later in the summer for the Toronto Blue Jays. The 27-year-old left-hander has had three consecutive quality starts in May for the Las Vegas 51s, Toronto's Triple-A affiliate, and is ready if the parent club calls his number. This time, however, he plans on sticking in the big leagues and earning a regular spot in the rotation.

Talk about taking a walk down memory lane. Strolling through the concourse at Cashman Field on April 17 during the Las Vegas 51s home opener, I could not help reminiscing about watching baseball games at the stadium during my childhood.

Construction crews work to put the finishing touches on Aces Ballpark during media day April 7 in downtown Reno. The ballpark was financed partly with about $30 million of county-issued bonds backed by a car-rental tax set up in 2003.
