Prior to arriving at Canyon Springs in 2005, Cooper worked as an assistant coach at Bishop Gorman and in the AFL with the Utah Blaze.

Liberty High football coach resigns: PREP FOOTBALL: Markouzis says he wants to spend more time with newborn son; Tuesday, March 10, 2009; By Ray Brewer; The only coach in the history of Liberty High’s football program has resigned. Lou Markouzis, who opened the school in 2003, resigned on Monday to spend more time raising his 4-month-old son, he said.

He was at the Summerlin Catholic school to interview for its head football coaching position and just needed one tour through its 36-acre, multi-million dollar campus to be sold.

Senior Julie Owens wanted to make the most of that opportunity. With the girls' Sunset Regional championship on the line against Bishop Gorman, Owens led the Bulldogs with a pair of goals, defeating Gorman 2-0 at Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex and returning the Bulldogs to the Southern Nevada State Championship for the second consecutive season.

Budget cuts behind trimming football season by one game: PREP FOOTBALL: Season will start Sept. 4 instead of last Friday in August; Monday, March 9, 2009; By Ray Brewer; One of Nevada’s oldest high school football rivalries will be put on hold for the foreseeable future starting next fall. The annual “Jug Game” between Basic and Boulder City highs, which is usually the season opener for both schools on the last Friday of August, was canceled after the Clark County School District eliminated the opening week contests it referred to as hall-of-fame games.

The Mustangs, who had previously advanced to the Sunset Regional championship, replayed its quarterfinal match with dominance as Shadow Ridge blasted Sierra Vista 4-1.

Arbor View cruises past Durango: PREP SOCCER: Aggies set to face Bishop Gorman in Sunset Regional semifinals; Wednesday, March 4, 2009; By Ray Brewer; The Durango High School girls' soccer team trailed by four goals with 10 minutes to play Wednesday in its Sunset Regional quarterfinal game when coach Barry Forget asked the seven players on his bench who wanted to be inserted into the game. Nobody immediately stood up. Four girls eventually took the coach up on his offer and played the final minutes of the Trailblazers' 4-0 season-ending defeat to Arbor View.

Lake Mead fish levels drop: Wednesday, March 4, 2009; By Sean Ammerman; Decreasing water levels at Lake Mead coupled with the spread of invasive quagga mussels have made the lake increasingly difficult to stock with fish. Nevada Department of Wildlife fish biologist Jon Sjoberg said a two-year drought, which has lowered Lake Mead's waters, along with the quagga mussel, which has impacted the lake's ecosystem since discovered in January 2007, have led to what is expected to be an 11 percent drop in fish stocking for 2009.

UNLV trio named to Mountain West Conference 10th anniversary golf team: Saving Par:; Wednesday, March 4, 2009; Jeff Jensen; The UNLV women's golf program placed three players on the Mountain West Conference 10th Anniversary Golf Team that was recently announced by the league. A pair of former Rebels, Sunny Oh and Elena Kurokawa, are on the team, along with current UNLV junior Natasha Krishna.

NIAA, CCSD calls mulligan on Sunset Regional soccer playoffs: PREP SOCCER: Shadow Ridge forfeit alters bracket; Tuesday, March 3, 2009; By Ray Brewer; The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, the governing body of high school sports in Nevada, announced Tuesday that an investigation Monday by the Clark County School District revealed Shadow Ridge used an ineligible player in nine regular season games. The ruling will force two of the tournament's quarterfinal games to be replayed after Shadow Ridge was moved to the Northwest Division's No. 3 seed, reviving the seasons at Gorman, Centennial, Durango and Sierra Vista.
