The Silverado High basketball team led visiting Coronado by nine points Wednesday in the fourth quarter of a key Southeast Division game, but faded down the stretch in surrendering a 15-4 scoring run to trail by four points with less than a minute remaining.

With less than a minute remaining in Friday’s basketball game, Green Valley High senior guard Durrell McDonald dribbled past the full court press of defenders from visiting Silverado High and found himself in the clear on the fast break. Instead of continuing for what would have been an easy two points, the guard riffled a perfect pass to teammate Devan Kohn near the basket. Kohn easily converted the layup, putting on the final touches in Green Valley’s 71-58 victory.

Silverado senior Izaiah Thurmon capped off his high school football career with one of his finest performances. Thurmon rushed for just less than 250 yards as Silverado upset Green Valley 27-20 to close the season.

Foothill sophomore quarterback Drew Doxtator has gone from an unknown at the beginning of the season to one of the valley’s best passers. Doxtator had yet another big night for the Falcons Friday in a 28-13 Homecoming victory over the Silverado Skyhawks. Doxtator threw for all four touchdowns.

The Liberty High football team gained 11 yards on nine first-quarter plays Friday against visiting Silverado. The Patriots had two punts blocked, their quarterback was intercepted twice and they twice lost fumbles. Yes, it wasn’t pretty. But Liberty closed the game with 19 unanswered points, using a school-record 235 rushing yards and three touchdowns from junior Niko Kapeli in a 26-20 victory.

A massive upset helped usher in the first week of high school football Friday night. Bonanza, which went 5-5 last season and lost its top two standouts, stunned visiting Silverado, one of the more highly touted teams coming into the season, 30-29.

When the Liberty High School football team takes the field Thursday for the first day of official practices, coaches will surely challenge their players with a variety of grueling conditioning drills. That is commonplace for several area programs during the first week of practice, with the training so unbearable for some they become ill or quit the team. But no matter how demanding Liberty coach Rich Muraco’s workouts are, defensive end Kimo Seau will have the confidence that he has thrived in more physically straining conditions.

Silverado Little League overcame a three-run deficit Monday in its West Regional pool play game against Arizona’s Rio Rico, scoring three runs with two outs in the fifth inning for an 8-6 victory in San Bernardino, Calif. Silverado improves to 2-1 in the six-team event, where the winner advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
