The defending state champion Canyon Springs High basketball team appears primed to make another run at the title. The Pioneers opened the Sunrise Regional playoffs Wednesday by leading visiting Silverado for virtually the entire game in a 71-62 quarterfinal victory.

We’ve never seen a basketball postseason like this. When Sunrise Regional playoffs start Wednesday night with four quarterfinal games, the general consensus is that each of the tournament’s eight teams have an equal chance to win the title. Yes, there is that much parity.

The Silverado High basketball team led visiting Coronado by nine points Wednesday in the fourth quarter of a key Southeast Division game, but faded down the stretch in surrendering a 15-4 scoring run to trail by four points with less than a minute remaining.

With less than a minute remaining in Friday’s basketball game, Green Valley High senior guard Durrell McDonald dribbled past the full court press of defenders from visiting Silverado High and found himself in the clear on the fast break. Instead of continuing for what would have been an easy two points, the guard riffled a perfect pass to teammate Devan Kohn near the basket. Kohn easily converted the layup, putting on the final touches in Green Valley’s 71-58 victory.

The Henderson City Council voted Tuesday night to appoint a new council member for the Ward 3 seat to replace outgoing Kathleen Vermillion, rather than hold a special election.

The city of Henderson is reminding all residents that they can recycle their holiday Christmas trees to be used for city parks and landscaping.
Silver Springs Park, located at 1950 Silver Springs Parkway, opened to the public Saturday after 11 months of construction. The park cost almost  $1.5 million to restore.

Henderson's Silver Springs Park reopened last week, after nearly a year of renovations. The 6.8-acre park, 1950 Silver Springs Parkway, is now equipped with turf areas, a new playground with shade, a walking course, a lighted ball field and restrooms.

Silverado senior Izaiah Thurmon capped off his high school football career with one of his finest performances. Thurmon rushed for just less than 250 yards as Silverado upset Green Valley 27-20 to close the season.

Foothill sophomore quarterback Drew Doxtator has gone from an unknown at the beginning of the season to one of the valley’s best passers. Doxtator had yet another big night for the Falcons Friday in a 28-13 Homecoming victory over the Silverado Skyhawks. Doxtator threw for all four touchdowns.

Liquid nitrogen is a typical tool in the arsenal of chefs around the valley, but a trio of local friends decided to use the ingredient in a decidedly lowbrow concoction — frozen popcorn. The idea for the treat was born out of experimentation. When Oliver Morowati used nitrogen on a batch of popcorn at a barbecue last year, Zelma Watsubo and Jean Francois Chavanel, Morowati’s friends and co-workers from the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas, thought it would make a marketable product.

Silverado’s Deandre Gause scored on a 30-yard pass from Savon Moniuz in the second quarter Thursday and the Skyhawks defense did the rest in a 7-0 victory against visiting Coronado.
Henderson area to get its first Nike Outlet store

A Nike Outlet is coming to the Henderson area. The store is scheduled to open Nov. 18 at Silverado Ranch Plaza, 9851 S. Eastern Ave., near St. Rose Parkway. The store is taking over a 15,000-square foot space previously occupied by Nordstrom Rack.
