Bowl Bites: UNLV AD focuses on value of bowl experience over financial loss

    December 31, 2013

Anyone in Las Vegas who cares about UNLV football even a little bit was excited the 7-5 Rebels landed in a bowl game for the first time in 13 years. Getting those people to actually attend the game was never going to be easy, though, and a day before kickoff the numbers are about as low as expected.

Work ethic helps bring UNLV’s Barnhill back to finish the job in Texas

    December 31, 2013

One of the many lessons Roy Barnhill imparted on his only son is that no matter how hard you’re working, someone is working harder. The only way to compete with those unknown masses is to push yourself up to and past your limits, then do the same thing tomorrow. “To make it you have to do this every day,” Roy Barnhill said.

Bowl Pick’em Against the Spread: Entry 3

    December 30, 2013

Underdogs are off to a rough start to bowl season as teams taking points have gone 6-9 against the spread. Their first five letters have performed more profitably for bettors. Unders are the story of bowl season in Las Vegas so far, as 12 of 15 games have ended with fewer points than the total posted in sports books.

    December 30, 2013

UNLV isn’t the only success story playing at Cotton Bowl Stadium on Wednesday. North Texas (8-4) has had a better 15-year run than the Rebels but recently their situations have been very similar, with the Mean Green winning only 22 games from 2005-12.

    December 17, 2013

There are two things the Rebels point to as reasons this bowl game in particular is special versus some of the others they may have landed in. The first is the date — Jan. 1 — because that day is often set aside for a full day of college football. The other is the venue — Cotton Bowl Stadium.

Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson isn’t optimistic that all seven of the league’s bowl-eligible football teams will play in a bowl game. "I don't think it will happen," he said. The league has six bowl tie-ins, more than ever before, but it also has more teams eligible than ever before. December 2, 2013

The fact we’re talking today about where a 7-5 UNLV team may play in a bowl game is a sign of how far the program has come in the past few months. The fact we’re also talking about how a 7-5 UNLV team could get left out of the bowl season altogether is a sign of how far the program still has to go in the next few years.
