Prosecutors today added murder to the charges a Nellis Air Force Base noncommissioned officer faces in a case involving his son. Three-month-old Aiden James Leach was airlifted on Feb. 1 to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition. The baby boy died Monday night.

A noncommissioned officer stationed at Nellis Air Force Base awaits a date next week in North Las Vegas Township Justice Court on child abuse charges involving his 3-month-old son. According to an arrest report, Staff Sgt. Andrew Leach, 31, is accused of causing severe head trauma and other injuries to his son, Aiden.

Nellis Air Force Base authorities found Theresa Rivera’s body in the garage of her home with a blanket covering her entire body and injuries to her face. A night earlier, Rivera and her husband, Tech Sgt. Rickey L. Massey Jr., had been involved in a fight at their on-base house in the 4400 block of Kevil Circle. It started when Massey snatched his wife’s phone to get her attention and escalated into a physical altercation. It ended with a fall in the kitchen and Massey realizing his wife was bleeding and not moving.

It may be hard to imagine that life as a high-flying fighter jock has lost its swagger, but the Air Force revealed it has a shortage of 200 fighter pilots this year. And if something isn’t done, the Air Force, which has about 3,000 fighter pilots, fears it may face a shortfall of 700 by 2021.

It’s about 9 a.m. on a recent Tuesday and there is a buzz outside the Thunderbird Nellis Air Force Base hangar — a buzz that hasn’t been heard in months. Maintenance crews have been Windexing and power-washing the F-16 Fighting Falcon jets all morning to make sure they glisten in the sun. On the runway, a procession of fighter jets takes off into a cloudy but blue sky. It’s a good day to fly. It's the first time since spring budget cuts that the Thunderbirds have been back in the air.

Charles Moore Jr. is no stranger to the fears and anxieties of war, having flown more than 600 combat hours in fighter jets and now serving as a commander of a collection of squadrons responsible for more than 130 aircraft that comprise the Air Force’s most diverse flying wing.
