Tony Sanchez took one step on Bishop Gorman High's campus and knew he had found a home. He was at the Summerlin Catholic school to interview for its head football coaching position and just needed one tour through its 36-acre, multi-million dollar campus to be sold.

Bishop Gorman High should have its new football coach by Tuesday.
The Centennial High School Bulldogs race out to congratulate Julie Owens, No. 11, after scoring her game winning second goal on a free kick. The Bulldogs took a 2-0 victory over Bishop Gorman at the Sunset Regional championship held at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex on Monday.

The Centennial girls' soccer team had the kind of second chance few teams get. Senior Julie Owens wanted to make the most of that opportunity. With the girls' Sunset Regional championship on the line against Bishop Gorman, Owens led the Bulldogs with a pair of goals, defeating Gorman 2-0 at Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex and returning the Bulldogs to the Southern Nevada State Championship for the second consecutive season.

One of Nevada’s oldest high school football rivalries will be put on hold for the foreseeable future starting next fall. The annual “Jug Game” between Basic and Boulder City highs, which is usually the season opener for both schools on the last Friday of August, was canceled after the Clark County School District eliminated the opening week contests it referred to as hall-of-fame games.

Members of the Arbor View High girls soccer team could not help feeling like they were cheated. Arbor View was supposed to play in the Sunset Regional championship game Monday. But after it was determined part of the tournament had to be replayed, the Aggies lost 2-0 Thursday to Bishop Gorman in the semifinals at Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex.

One week ago the Centennial girls' soccer team watched their season crumble at the hands of a 3-0 shutout to Arbor View in the Sunset Regional semifinals. Tears streamed down the defending state champions' faces as they boarded the bus home one final time together – or so they thought.

Despite finding themselves at the center of a controversy involving the use of an ineligible player, an opponent's lawsuit happy parent and the clerical errors of Clark County School administrators, the Shadow Ridge girls' soccer team appeared oblivious to the scandalous din surrounding the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex Wednesday. The Mustangs, who had previously advanced to the Sunset Regional championship, replayed its quarterfinal match with dominance as Shadow Ridge blasted Sierra Vista 4-1.

The Durango High School girls' soccer team trailed by four goals with 10 minutes to play Wednesday in its Sunset Regional quarterfinal game when coach Barry Forget asked the seven players on his bench who wanted to be inserted into the game. Nobody immediately stood up. Four girls eventually took the coach up on his offer and played the final minutes of the Trailblazers' 4-0 season-ending defeat to Arbor View.

Lake Mead fish levels drop

Decreasing water levels at Lake Mead coupled with the spread of invasive quagga mussels have made the lake increasingly difficult to stock with fish. Nevada Department of Wildlife fish biologist Jon Sjoberg said a two-year drought, which has lowered Lake Mead's waters, along with the quagga mussel, which has impacted the lake's ecosystem since discovered in January 2007, have led to what is expected to be an 11 percent drop in fish stocking for 2009.
UNLV trio named to Mountain West Conference 10th anniversary golf team

The UNLV women's golf program placed three players on the Mountain West Conference 10th Anniversary Golf Team that was recently announced by the league. A pair of former Rebels, Sunny Oh and Elena Kurokawa, are on the team, along with current UNLV junior Natasha Krishna.

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, the governing body of high school sports in Nevada, announced Tuesday that an investigation Monday by the Clark County School District revealed Shadow Ridge used an ineligible player in nine regular season games. The ruling will force two of the tournament's quarterfinal games to be replayed after Shadow Ridge was moved to the Northwest Division's No. 3 seed, reviving the seasons at Gorman, Centennial, Durango and Sierra Vista.

The Coronado girls' soccer team finally has its championship. The program, a regular in the playoffs since the school opened in 2001, had never made it past the Sunrise Regional semifinals. Determined to break the trend this winter, the girls dedicated themselves to putting in the work to have a memorable postseason. That run now includes a championship banner.

One of the high school girls soccer regional championship games for today was postponed while officials investigate whether or not Shadow Ridge High used an ineligible player during the month of February, said Donnie Nelson, assistant director of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.

Two years ago Lake Mead Christian Academy's Landon Littlefield had to watch Trinity celebrate a state championship after a victory over the Eagles. He wanted to make sure that never happened again. The motivation paid off for Littlefield as he helped Lake Mead win its second consecutive 1A state championship with a 59-49 victory over Pahranagat Valley Saturday at the Orleans Arena.

Bishop Gorman's John Loyd approached the free throw line of the Orleans Arena Friday night with 1.8 seconds remaining and the game tied. Loyd, who struggled all night to sink his shots, had two chances to clinch a state title and cap a 10-point fourth quarter comeback in a scenario most kids can only dream of in their driveways.
