With less than a minute remaining in Friday’s basketball game, Green Valley High senior guard Durrell McDonald dribbled past the full court press of defenders from visiting Silverado High and found himself in the clear on the fast break. Instead of continuing for what would have been an easy two points, the guard riffled a perfect pass to teammate Devan Kohn near the basket. Kohn easily converted the layup, putting on the final touches in Green Valley’s 71-58 victory.

Most teams would panic at the idea of having 57 seconds to go 80 yards to win a football game. To Green Valley, it’s only a slight inconvenience. “It’s the way we run our offense,” Green Valley coach Brian Castro said. “With our speed and tempo, we feel like we’re never out of a game.”

Green Valley High senior running back Aaron Love had been waiting to play in the Henderson Bowl rivalry football game against Basic since he was in the seventh grade. He made up for the lost time Friday — starting on the first play from scrimmage. Love’s 65-yard touchdown run seconds into Henderson Bowl XXI highlighted a 270 yard rushing performance and carried Green Valley to a 36-33 victory to snap a three-game wining streak in the series by Basic.

The annual Henderson Bowl high school football game between Basic and Green Valley will have a different feel to it Thursday night. Basic could increase its winning streak to a series-best three games for the first time in the 20 years of the rivalry, but its players could still go home disappointed. Beating Green Valley, you see, will only be half the battle for the Wolves. They also need Del Sol to take care of Silverado to advance to next week’s playoffs.

Green Valley High sophomore Alexandra Kaui eyed her putt Tuesday on the 18th hole at the Hidden Valley Country Club in Reno. With the Gators holding a commanding lead at the two-day 4A classification state tournament, and Kaui’s birdie attempt was a mere formality in putting the finishing touches on what was arguably the most dominating team performance in tournament history.
