Basic High running back Edward Villaros knew he would be back to collect his football team’s most valuable possession. The senior carried the Henderson Bowl trophy from the Wolves’ locker room to the field Thursday night minutes before Henderson Bowl XIX, the annual game between Basic and host Green Valley High. He kissed the side of the bowl, placed it on a table underneath the scoreboard and jogged with confidence to the sideline for the start of game

The senior defensive lineman on the Green Valley High football team was going through conditioning drills earlier last week at practice when he noticed his heart was racing. He wasn’t keeping up his teammates and had a concerned look on his face.

Basic High quarterback Tyler Dobbins has seemingly been waiting for this football game his entire life. His teammates, and the players at rival Green Valley High, surely have the same anticipation. Dobbins, a lifelong Henderson resident, has been attending Basic games since he was in grade school. He’s long dreamed of the day when it would be his turn to lead his beloved Wolves onto the field for a meaningful game. On Thursday night, the senior quarterback will get his chance.

Canyon Springs’ Devin Rimmey took the opening kickoff of Friday’s second half against Green Valley and raced 65 yards, each stride knocking the rust off the Pioneers after a slow season-opening half. That kick return set the tempo for a second half that saw the Pioneers explode for 29 points in coach Hunkie Cooper’s debut at Canyon Springs , a 42-21 win over Green Valley.

Centennial had no reason to suspect anything out of the ordinary when Green Valley lined up for a 44-yard field goal attempt with seven minutes remaining in Friday night’s game. Green Valley senior kicker Nolan Kohorst is widely considered to have the strongest leg in the Las Vegas valley.

Bishop Gorman senior Jeff Malm is known for his prowess at the plate, but it was his extraordinary command on the mound Thursday that lifted the Gaels past Green Valley 2-1 in eight innings in the opening round of the 4A state championship tournament. Malm bewildered opposing hitters and wowed a sold out Morse Stadium crowd at the College of Southern Nevada as he racked up 15 strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

Nobody would have questioned his dedication if Desert Pines quarterback Dalton Leilua had decided to skip Saturday's Southern Nevada Coaches Association skills competition. After all, he had just competed in another recruiting event earlier in the day and had spent four hours driving back to Las Vegas from Moorpark, Calif. But neither the long trip nor the back-to-back workouts slowed him down. Not much has in his career with the Jaguars.

Former Bishop Gorman football standout Justin Chaisson is one step closer to pursuing his gridiron dreams at the University of Oklahoma thanks to a plea deal reached Wednesday. Chaisson pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor coercion and one count of misdemeanor domestic battery stemming from an alleged attack on his ex-girlfriend where Chaisson supposedly threatened to kill the young woman with a screwdriver after violently forcing her into his car.

When diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called Burkitt's Lymphoma as an 8-year-old growing up in Green Valley, Todd Faranda never pondered how long he would live. His main concern was when he'd get his next turn at the plate.

Griffith Elementary School in Northwest Las Vegas has a unique lineup for its daily morning announcements. They remind the kids of the school's mission statement, to always try their best. Then they give a "word of the day" to increase vocabulary, followed by any important daily announcements and the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, at least in the Fall, they announce the New York Giants score.

Some people don't know what Ultimate Frisbee is. Other people, however, wouldn't spend their time doing anything but playing the game. UNLV's club Frisbee team hasn't been around too long, but is looking for their chance to shine.

Talk about taking a walk down memory lane. Strolling through the concourse at Cashman Field on April 17 during the Las Vegas 51s home opener, I could not help reminiscing about watching baseball games at the stadium during my childhood.

Former Bishop Gorman football star Justin Chaisson did not appear in front of Judge Eric Goodman Thursday morning in Clark County District Court for a protective order hearing. But the presence of Chaisson's lawyer, Michael Cristalli, was all the University of Oklahoma football recruit needed to avoid a misdemeanor charge of violating a restraining order against his ex-girlfriend.
