Canyon Springs’ Devin Rimmey took the opening kickoff of Friday’s second half against Green Valley and raced 65 yards, each stride knocking the rust off the Pioneers after a slow season-opening half. That kick return set the tempo for a second half that saw the Pioneers explode for 29 points in coach Hunkie Cooper’s debut at Canyon Springs , a 42-21 win over Green Valley.

Brandyn Dombrowski watched Saturday in the San Diego Chargers’ weight room as players were summoned one-by-one to the front office. This is how it works on NFL cut day — when teams are required to trim their rosters to 53 players — in San Diego. If a Chargers official pulls a player aside during their work out, he is no longer on the team.
LaQuan Phillips hangs outs on the Green Valley sideline Friday as Green Valley took on Centennial.  Phillips bruised his spine and became temporarily paralyzed last year against Centennial while playing for Green Valley.

LaQuan Phillips would not have missed this for anything. Phillips, the former Green Valley defensive back who was temporarily paralyzed last season after suffering a bruised spine in a game against Centennial, watched this season’s showdown between Green Valley and Centennial Friday night from the stands in his No. 7 jersey.

Centennial had no reason to suspect anything out of the ordinary when Green Valley lined up for a 44-yard field goal attempt with seven minutes remaining in Friday night’s game. Green Valley senior kicker Nolan Kohorst is widely considered to have the strongest leg in the Las Vegas valley.

Fight over health care draws crowd to Titus event

The national debate over health care reform came to the streets of Henderson on Saturday when Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.) held a Congress on the Corner event in the Albertsons on Boulder Highway and Lake Mead Parkway. About 300 people came to the event, many with homemade signs or American flags, to voice their support or opposition to proposed health care reform and other issues before Congress. While Titus visited with those who came early enough to get a ticket to speak with her in person, most opposing Titus gathered in the store parking lot.
