How does a Nevada high school get ranked 13th best in the country? By mistake. A year and a half ago, a state worker inside a sprawling government building a block from the state Capitol clicked his mouse, unwittingly sending bad data to a federal government education database.

U.S. News and World Report is looking into a local high school’s ranking as the nation’s 13th-best public high school after its principal questioned the data used by the national magazine.

Green Valley High School is listed as the 13th best public high school in the nation, according to a U.S. News and World Report ranking. However, some of the student data that the national magazine is using for the Henderson high school are incorrect, calling into question the validity of U.S. News’ rankings. Green Valley High School Principal Jeff Horn alerted the Las Vegas Sun to the incorrect information late Monday night after U.S. News posted the rankings on its website.

Two Clark County School District students were recently named among the 2012 National Merit Scholars, a prestigious honor bestowed to just 1,000 distinguished high school seniors across the nation each year. Last week, Northwest Career and Technical Academy senior Kevin Jia-Shi Chen and Green Valley High School senior Jason Singh were among the first round of winners announced in the 57th annual scholarship program. Three more rounds of winners will be announced on May 2 and 23, and July 9.
Couple to be arraigned in death of missing Henderson cab driver

A married couple who are both accused in the slaying of a missing Henderson cab driver will go before a judge next week in Henderson Justice Court.
Henderson Police said a man fatally shot his wife before killing himself late Tuesday night in an apparent murder-suicide. The incident happened at a home at 2338 Thayer Avenue, near Windmill and Green Valley parkways.

A Henderson man fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself late Tuesday night, Henderson Police said. He called 911 shortly before midnight to report he had just killed his wife and was going to commit suicide.

Matt Gerber would have been content staying as an assistant high school football coach. Then, the head coaching position opened at Durango High. Gerber, who was on Durango’s staff from 1998 to 2005, was hired Friday as the Trailblazers’ new coach. He was Green Valley High’s head coach for five years through the 2010 season before spending last year as the offensive coordinator at Silverado.

The Green Valley High basketball team couldn’t extend its magical season Thursday in the 4A state semifinals at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno. But they didn’t go down without a fight. The Sunrise Region champion Gators trailed Northern Nevada’s Hug High by 16 points to open the fourth quarter, but chipped away at the deficit and had two shots to win at the buzzer.

It’s a chilly Sunday afternoon and Durrell McDonald, a key to Green Valley High School’s journey to this week’s state basketball tournament, is shooting hoops to stay sharp. But he’s not at the school’s gym with its polished wood floor or at an athletic club, or anywhere indoors suitable for one of the state’s top players.

Close-knit teens honor friends at candlelight vigil after Saturday accident

A close-knit group lost part of its family Saturday afternoon when two teens died in a Henderson car crash. That's how friends of Johnny Castiblanco, 19, and Trevor Zarvian, 19, described the pain of the tragedy, which brought scores of teens, parents and former coaches to a candlelight vigil Sunday evening at the accident site on Windmill Parkway, not far from Green Valley Parkway. "We were all a tight-knit group, which is why it hurts so much," Zach Bobenhausen, 19, said. The friends played video games, went to the batting cages and attended sports games together on a regular basis.
