Legislators are pushing a bill that would remove loopholes from Nevada’s Renewable Portfolio Standard, which mandates that 25 percent of Nevada’s energy will come from renewable sources by 2025. Loopholes are provisions allowing energy companies such as NV Energy to meet the standard through measures other than actual renewable energy production.

Sen. Harry Reid, who has a long history of taking on the the state’s electric monopoly NV Energy, will do so again today in his biannual speech to the Legislature in Carson City. According to sources familiar with the speech, Reid will talk broadly about diversifying Nevada’s economy and specifically press legislators to strengthen the state’s renewable energy mandate. A law known as the renewable energy portfolio sets out the percentage of energy delivered to Nevadans that must come from renewable sources such as solar, wind, geothermal and hydroelectric.

Politics: President should make strategy on energy more clear in State of the Union, but achieving bipartisan support could be a battle
When he speaks to Congress tonight, President Barack Obama will repeat many familiar points about his 2013 agenda. He already has articulated the stakes facing gun control and, more or less, detailed his position on immigration reform. But the State of the Union speech will be Obama’s first opportunity to present a detailed, second-term strategy for the issue he has identified as his next priority: energy.
