Friday’s buzz around the latest installment of the Basic-Boulder City Jug Game took the rivalry back to the olden days, when friendly pranks were a norm. The talk was of a blue paw print surfacing on the Eagles’ field. Come game time, the field was unscathed.

Jordyn Syler has already amassed quite a trophy case for someone who’s 12. Syler, a Elton M. Garrett Junior High eighth grader, has placed in the Western States Golf Association’s junior championship five years in a row in her age group. Two weekends ago, she won the 2009 tournament in the 11-12 year old class in Portland, Ore.

Bridget Ward lined up her putt a few feet from the hole, attempting to finish practice with a perfect performance on the putting green in four tries. The short putt traveled slowly but disappeared surely into the hole, a microcosm in the Boulder City High girls golf team’s quest to defend their 3A state championship.

Boulder City pool closes for repairs

Boulder City residents will have a dry September, as the municipal pool closed today for repairs. The pool usually closes for two weeks after Labor Day for maintenance and installation of the bubble that allows winter swimming. But this year, the pool is in for some overdue work.

The Boulder City High volleyball team will have more players on its roster this fall than most years and coach Cherise Roe knows that depth will be a key in the Eagles having a successful season. The final roster will include 12 girls, four more than last year’s campaign when Boulder City took fourth in the 3A Southern League.

Alex Smith could be justifiably furious. He could be rethinking every minor mistake and replaying every moment of his EnduroCross race from two weekends ago. No one would blame him. Smith missed qualifying for EnduroCross nationals by less than one second in the race at the Orleans Arena on July 25. Instead of dwelling, however, Smith is energized.

Boulder City High boys basketball coach Kurt Bailey wasn’t concerned with his team’s record during this tournament. Playing last week for the first time since winning the 3A state championship last winter, the Eagles went 1-4 during the Lake Mead Christian Academy’s Summer Madness tournament.
Lori Dunsmore, 51, edges deep while training Monday at Lake Mead for the 16th Water Ski Racing World Championships July 18-25 in Antwerp, Belgium. The event marks Dunsmores 23rd year competing as a member of the U.S. Elite Water Ski Racing Team.

Lori Dunsmore isn’t supposed to be at the top of her sport. She should be long retired, a promise the 51-year-old Boulder City resident made to her daughter more than a decade ago. But there is something about the thrill of competition that keeps Dunsmore coming back to the water. Dunsmore will compete July 18 to 25 with the U.S. Elite Water Ski Racing team at the 16th Water Ski Racing World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.

The Boulder City Little League Majors Division all-star team knows history isn't on their side. Still, the group of 11- to 13-year-olds are confident they can accomplish something that is rarely done by the local league: Win a game in the tough District 2 tournament.

Boulder City High's American Legion baseball team picked the right team to beat for its first win of the summer. The Junior Division Eagles rallied in their final at bat June 18 against visiting Faith Lutheran for a 7-6 victory. Tanner Howell had a game-ending single to score Corbett Fleming with the winning run.

Nothing beats a day at the race track for the Henderson family of Boulder City. Siblings Meaghan and DJ compete on NHRA junior drag racing circuits, following in the footsteps of their father, Don Henderson, who raced dragsters during his childhood. Whether it's locally at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway or traveling to regional events on the West Coast, the family can't wait to get to the track for a weekend of races.

Boulder City High senior-to-be Matt Lundgren showed why he is one of the state's top runners last weekend. A multiple state champion in long-distance events for the Eagles, Lundgren was expected to contend for the 2-mile crown at the 34th annual Great Southwest Track & Field Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.

Bootleg Canyon trailmaster position left vacant

Members of the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission are not happy that the Bootleg Canyon trailmaster’s position has been eliminated in next year’s budget. They said they fought for the position during a February budget hearing and left the hearing assured the position would remain. So they were surprised when they found out May 27 that the position would not be filled.
