Brothers bring competitive nature to Boulder City football team

Many midsummer days ago, on a neighborhood street in suburban Cleveland, Ross and Jack Lamarca would grab the attention of their entire flock of friends. It would happen after backyard baseball or a football game in the park, when Jack would get fed up with Ross taking him down or Ross would take objection to a dirty look from Jack. “They’d call them the Lamarca fights,” Jack Lamarca said. “We’d wrestle and fight and all of our friends would love watching us.”

The Boulder City High football team controls its own destiny. If the Eagles beat Mesquite’s Virgin Valley High on Oct. 23, they will host a first-round playoff game in two weeks. A loss, however, would put them on the road for entire postseason.

Paxton Fleming is a five-tool student-athlete for Boulder City High. When she’s not on the softball diamond in the spring and summer, she’s in the gym on the volleyball or basketball courts in the fall and winter. When she’s not serving as the student body president, she’s closing in on a salutatorian finish to her academic high school career.

The Boulder City and Moapa Valley high football teams each have three games left in the regular season. Yet, when 3A Southern League rivals square off at 7 p.m. on Oct. 16 at Boulder City, the winning team will be guaranteed a share of the league title and be a virtual lock to reach the 3A state semifinals. Oddly enough, the game is also the league opener for both schools.

The Boulder City High football team put an exclamation point on the homecoming celebration. The Eagles surrendered less than 50 yards for the second consecutive week on Oct. 2 and running back Devin Combs rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown in a 15-10 victory against visiting Faith Lutheran.

The Boulder City High girls soccer team appeared to be headed toward a miserable season after their first two games. The Eagles were defeated by a combined 12-1, including a humbling 7-1 loss to Pahrump Valley were they lacked aggression and struggled playing as a team, first-year coach Duncan Stark said.

It won’t take much for members of the Boulder City High football team to find motivation for this week’s game. The Eagles host former 3A Southern League rival Faith Lutheran at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 for their homecoming game — a game the players surely circled when the schedule was released.

Boulder City High senior Steven Kaposta takes pride in beating the competition. An all-state linebacker last year, Kaposta has 46 tackles and four sacks through the Eagles first four football games this fall. He also has placed second in the state wrestling meet the past two years and is a reliable infielder on Boulder City’s baseball team. While sports are his passion and why he’s gained notoriety, his friends will always know Kaposta as the kid who can get them free pizza.

The Boulder City High football team gave up two quick touchdowns in the first quarter on Sept. 18 against host Canyon View of Cedar City, Utah, and couldn’t recover in a 27-18 defeat.
Boulder City High junior Dana Prash took fourth in the small school girls division on Sept. 12 at the Larry Burgess Las Vegas Cross Country Invitational at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Boulder City cross country teams had high finishers in multiple races on Sept. 12 during the Larry Burgess Lake Mead Invitational at Veterans Memorial Park. Senior Matt Lundgren raced independently in the large-school boys race and placed 10th on the 3.1 mile course in 17 minutes, 27 seconds to lead the strong showing for the Eagles.
Boulder City High senior Meaghan Henderson, 17, won her first race in the full-size drag racers earlier this month after five years at the junior level.

Meaghan and Daniel Henderson have been around drag racing since they were toddlers, following their father to the track on hot Nevada mornings. These days, it’s their dad that follows them to the track, watching the both of them climb up the junior drag racing ranks.

The seniors on this year’s Boulder City High boys soccer team remember the losing. Promoted to the varsity team during their freshmen and sophomore seasons, the players took their lumps facing older and more inexperienced competition. Now, it is their turn for success.

While the Boulder City High football team was disappointed in how it opened the season on Aug. 28, the Eagles understand it was just one game. They had less than 100 yards of offense in being blanked by Basic 26-0 in the annual Jug Game, but coach Alex Kazel still found plenty of positives in the performance.
