Moapa Valley’s defense had carried the team the past two weeks. It was the offense’s turn in a 41-19 victory over league opponent Boulder City Thursday night. An offensive explosion led the Pirates out of an early 13-7 hole on the road and gave them the top seed in the 3A South division.

Boulder City is surging to end the season. The Eagles have won two of their last three — and challenged Basic in a loss in between the two victories — to make a four-game losing streak a distant memory. Behind 147 rushing yards and 10 tackles from Tyler Washburn, Boulder City routed host Clark 33-7 Friday night.

Senior quarterback Eddie Vega led Basic to a 20-7 win over rival Boulder City on Friday night. Vega threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another as the Wolves won the annual Jug Game without much of a problem. They never trailed and didn’t allow the Eagles to the score until the fourth quarter.

Tyler Washburn starred for Boulder City as it traveled into town to beat 4A opponent Western 28-13. Washburn had 10 carries for 65 yards, and more notably, led a stout defensive effort with 11 tackles. It followed a 15-tackle performance from Washburn last week.

If he lands his jumps cleanly and leans just right into the curves, he ought to finish the challenging ramp-filled outdoor track in less than 30 seconds. Now comes the adrenaline rush.

Zane Grothe remembers checking the lane assignments hours before swimming in the 500-freestyle finals Saturday at the Southern California Swimming Grand Prix in Long Beach, Calif. Grothe, a senior at Boulder City High, spotted his name on the list in lane No. 6. Then, another name immediately popped out — Michael Phelps was assigned to lane No. 4.

Many midsummer days ago, on a neighborhood street in suburban Cleveland, Ross and Jack Lamarca would grab the attention of their entire flock of friends. It would happen after backyard baseball or a football game in the park, when Jack would get fed up with Ross taking him down or Ross would take objection to a dirty look from Jack. “They’d call them the Lamarca fights,” Jack Lamarca said. “We’d wrestle and fight and all of our friends would love watching us.”
