Feds permit MGM Mirage to import 2 dolphins

A federal agency has granted MGM Mirage a permit to import two Atlantic bottlenose dolphins for public display in Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden on the Las Vegas Strip. The Mirage filed an application April 15 with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service to import two captive Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, a male and a female, from Bermuda for breeding. The permit was granted on Aug. 4 and was published in the Federal Register on Monday, said Jennifer Skidmore, spokeswoman for the service.

More than five years after last appearing onstage at The Mirage, Siegfried & Roy are in rehearsals for their much-anticipated reunion and farewell performance. An official announcement is expected that the legendary illusionists will appear in a special hourlong, prime-time installment of the ABC News program “20/20,” to be recorded live at the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute’s Keep Memory Alive “Power of Love” benefit gala, scheduled for Feb. 28 at the Bellagio.

One of Las Vegas’ most successful acts was born on the high seas when Siegfried Fischbacher met Roy Horn on a cruise ship in 1957. Siegfried worked as a cabin steward, Roy as a waiter. The pair began doing magic tricks for the ship’s passengers and eventually got their own show.

Blood drive The Mirage was already scheduled to hold an employee-only blood drive next Thursday, and in the wake of the tiger attack on Roy Horn, United Blood Services will extend the drive for a second day. Group spokesman Dan Pern said many people have been calling United Blood Services to find out how they can donate blood in Horn's name. Those interested should call 233-9620 to set up an appointment.
