Andre Agassi was preparing to face longtime tennis rival and friend Pete Sampras in February during an exhibition match at Madison Square Garden in New York. But before he took to the court, the Las Vegas native had a phone call to make.

Andre Agassi was right at home. The gymnasium at the school bearing his name was packed with students cheering as the tennis legend walked to the podium to speak at a ceremony in his honor. Agassi was formally introduced as the newest member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, capping a lengthy career in which the 40-year-old Las Vegan won eight grand slam championships and compiled a record of 870-274 with 60 tournament titles.

I don’t know Andre Agassi, the Las Vegas tennis legend and, as of Tuesday, admitted former crystal meth user. But I have liked him since the day he started losing his hair and responded by shaving it off.

The first class of graduates from the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy celebrated Friday night with a bold attack on critics of the public charter school, which primarily serves students from low-income areas. The class of 2009 is prepared to do just that as all 34 graduates have been accepted to and plan on attending college in the fall. The commencement of the first group of high school students is a major milestone for the school, which was founded by tennis legend Andre Agassi to serve what he called an “economically challenged” neighborhood.

Companies representing tennis stars Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf have filed lawsuits in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas over the alleged use of their names in Internet site domain names, alleging trademark infringement and cybersquatting.
Desmend Jetton, an Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy senior, will be among the charter school's first graduating class this spring. The academy has a predominantly black student population in kindergarten through grade 12. About 600 students attend, and 1,000 are on the waiting list.

When Ashley Justice arrived at Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy for eighth grade, she was uncertain what she would find. She didn’t know what a charter school was. Money - more of it - also plays a vital role in the success of the school, as it gets a financial boost from the Agassi Foundation. The state gives schools $4,696 per student, and in Clark County, local taxes boost that to $6,474. The Agassi Foundation chips in roughly $2,500 more per student, and that only gets the Agassi school up to the national average for per-pupil funding.
