Letter to the editor:

Grateful for the return of Obama

I strongly recommend the Sept. 11 column by Charles Blow, “In finally taking on Trump, Obama heeds cry for help,” which expressed thanks to former President Barack Obama for loosening President Donald Trump’s stranglehold on the news and suggested that his voice, even as a former president, is disruptive.

It proves that Obama’s words “audacity of hope” were not empty campaign rhetoric but words of an inspirational and aspirational leader who seeks the best in human behavior — the championing of honor, integrity and truthfulness. How can one doubt Obama’s audacity after dealing with a Republican Congress led by Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, who freely admitted it was his goal to make Obama a one-term president? Such a declared goal should also remind us of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s analogy that this country has for all too long defaulted on the promissory note to men of color that all men are created equal.

I also want to thank Obama and commend his never-failing audacity of hope in fighting against racism, xenophobia and misogyny. Having worked on his 2008 presidential campaign, I had no doubt he would be back, and I implore other former presidents and all Democrats to do the same.
