Gorman Recruits to UNLV Football

The Bishop Gorman High School to UNLV football pipeline will begin with offensive linemen Jaron Caldwell and Julio Garcia II, pictured here Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016. They are both expected to sign national letters of intent Wednesday, Feb. 3.

UNLV football coach Tony Sanchez delivered on a promise he made to the Las Vegas-area recruits who signed Wednesday with the Rebels.

Sanchez, determined to use locals as the face of the program, told prospects during recruiting they’d eventually be on billboards throughout town to promote the team. So, less than 24 hours after Bishop Gorman’s Julio Garcia II and Jaron Caldwell, and Coronado’s Donovan Outlaw signed, they appeared on a video billboard outside the Thomas & Mack Center on campus.

“Homegrown Rebels,” the message read. It included their pictures in UNLV jerseys and listed their names — pretty cool, right? It’s the same billboard used to promote events at the arena, which is seen by visitors leaving McCarran International Airport through the airport connector onto Tropicana Avenue.

Sanchez has repeatedly said he wants to keep the best local talent at home. Putting players on the arena's marquee sure makes a statement to future recruits.

“Hometown Heroes,” Garcia, a native Las Vegan, tweeted.
