Kalyja Waialae accounted for three touchdowns today for the Green Valley High football team in a 21-8 victory against visiting Desert Oasis in the season opener for both schools.

The sophomore Waialae had touchdown passes of about 5 and 10 yards, hooking up with Christian Mayberry and Jaymz Bischoff to help the Gators build a 21-0 halftime lead.

The cushion was needed — Green Valley was held scoreless in the second half.

“We have a lot of new guys, a lot of young guys,” Green Valley coach Brian Castro said. “The focus was good. Now we get another week of practice to work on things and watch these guys grow.”
