It’s the football game some players wait their entire high school careers to be part of.

Basic travels to Green Valley tonight for Henderson Bowl XXV, a rivalry game many consider the most prestigious in Southern Nevada.

Basic was Henderson’s lone high school until Green Valley opened in 1991, and the teams have played every season since. Both have tremendous community support, often packing the stands each Friday night — regardless of the opponent. For this game, there won’t be an empty seat at Green Valley’s “Swamp.”

Green Valley leads the all-time series 16-8, mostly because it dominated the rivalry in the mid- to late 1990s. While Green Valley has won the last four meetings, the outcomes are always close. In the past 10 years, in fact, the game has been decided by a touchdown or less six times.

Basic (4-1) could break its Henderson Bowl losing streak. The Wolves last season made a deep playoff run to reach the Sunrise Regional championship game and have continued the good play into this season. They are outscoring opponents 190-65.

Green Valley (2-3) is trying to recover after surrendering 51 points in the first half last week against Liberty. But, in this rivalry, stats and records are unimportant. Both teams will be ready to play.

It’s not the lone game of interest tonight.

Teams in the Sunrise Region begin league play, including five-time defending champion Liberty at Canyon Springs. Canyon Springs always plays Liberty tough, beating the Patriots last year in the regular season. It’s their lone loss to a Sunrise opponent in the past five seasons.

In the Sunset Region, top-10 local teams Bishop Gorman and Centennial are in action, with Gorman hosting Durango for its homecoming game, and Centennial at Cimarron-Memorial.

In the Division I-A, the night is highlighted by the “Hammer Game” in Mesquite as host Virgin Valley takes on rival Moapa Valley. The two communities are separated by about a 30-minute drive on Interstate 15 to create a natural rivalry in every sport.
