UNLV’s McCaw earns Mountain West Player of the Week honors

UNLV Defeats Prairie View

UNLV guard Patrick McCaw (22) directs traffic versus Prairie View at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday, November 28, 2015.

Building on his freshman development, UNLV sophomore guard Pat McCaw earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors for a four-game stretch in which he made his case, again, as the Rebels’ best overall player.

During a 3-1 week in which UNLV defeated No. 13 Indiana and lost by two to UCLA, McCaw averaged 20.8 points, 5 assists, 3.8 steals and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting above 50 percent from the field, including a team-best 41.9 percent behind the three-point line. He had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.9, and for the season he leads the team in points, assists, steals, minutes and 3-point shooting percentage.

Last year, McCaw’s role changed throughout the season. First he was a defensive specialist off the bench, then a backup point guard taking on more duties and then, when freshman Rashad Vaughn went down for the season, McCaw flashed the offensive ability that had most predicting a big sophomore year for the St. Louis native.

So far, so good.

It’s McCaw’s first career weekly honor from the league and the first time a Rebel has received it since Christian Wood led UNLV to a home victory against Arizona last December.
