Driver suspected of DUI after crashing into tree near Valley View, Charleston

Updated Sunday, March 29, 2015 | 1:13 p.m.

A man is suspected of driving under the influence this morning after crashing his car into a palm tree near the intersection of Charleston and Valley View boulevards, according to Metro Police.

Police responded to the crash about 6:45 a.m. The driver, 34, was traveling south in a 2006 Nissan 350Z in the left lane of Valley View Boulevard when he struck the median curb. He over-corrected and his car began to rotate clockwise. The Nissan crossed all travel lanes and slid sideways toward the right edge of the roadway. The car then traveled onto a raised curb and a grass embankment, striking a palm tree. The tree intruded into the passenger compartment. The driver had to be mechanically extricated from his car and was transported to University Medical Center Trauma with critical injuries.

Metro's fatal detail is investigating the accident and the driver is being tested for DUI, Lt. John Liberty said.

Valley View south of Charleston was closed for about five hours while officers investigated.
