How is exorbitant tax legal?

Thanks to the letter writer who expressed outrage about the tax on his car registration fee (“Why is tax on vehicle registration so high?” Las Vegas Sun, March 18), a tax that is almost 10 times the fee. I have expressed the same outrage the past three years.

Put another way, that’s a 1,000 percent tax on an expense I can’t avoid. How is that legal?
