letter to the editor:

Support of Israel is paramount

Mr. Greenspun, I thoroughly enjoyed your editorial about the need to support Israel (“US-Israel’s relationship is what matters,” Las Vegas Sun, March 1).

I usually don’t agree with your viewpoints that are way to the left of mine, but the need to support the Israeli government is paramount. When talking about Israel and the surrounding countries, I simply think: If Israel didn’t have any weapons, they would be annihilated. If the other countries had no weapons, there would be peace. Reading the book “The Haj” by Leon Uris years ago helped me understand the precarious situation and the hatred taught against the Jews by parents in surrounding areas for generations.

One thing that really disturbs me — and hopefully you — is the push for divestiture of any investments connected to Israel by universities. These universities are usually bastions of liberalism, and most of your fellow Jews support the Democratic Party. This is really a juxtaposition to my way of thinking. When I moved to Henderson from Orange County a little over five years ago, I had been a member of the Presbyterian Church in Irvine, Calif. Their parent organization pushed for such a divestiture last year, and I would have dropped out of the church if I had still lived there.

It is hard for me to understand the continued support of the Democratic Party by most Jews I know when the Democratic Party takes the Jews for granted and then completely does everything it can to distance itself from Israel.

I totally agree with your support for Israel, one of the most productive and enlightened areas in the world. Sure, they have problems, one of which is the ultra-orthodox demanding support, having huge families and not working. This sounds familiar in many respects to any welfare program that has ever been instituted.
