A Mesquite man died Tuesday after his car crashed and became submerged in a man-made lake.
James Matthew McMurray Jr., 78, was traveling on Grapevine Road at about 12:50 p.m. Tuesday when his 2004 Chevrolet Impala lost control at the intersection with Pioneer Boulevard in Mesquite, Nevada Highway Patrol officials said in a statement.
McMurray, who NHP says was driving too fast for conditions and disobeyed traffic signs, was unable to turn right onto eastbound Pioneer and crossed the intersection in a northeastern direction. After striking a raised curb, McMurray entered a landscape area and traveled across rock and a sidewalk before plunging into the lake.
The Impala became fully submerged after multiple failed rescue attempts, and McMurray was pronounced dead on scene 7:30 p.m. by a Coroner's Office investigator.
