Recipe: The Goodmans’ mob meatballs

spaghetti meatballs

Former Mayor Oscar Goodman jotted down this meatball recipe after a former client, alleged Chicago mob boss John “No Nose” DiFronzo, cooked them for him. Goodman was a criminal defense attorney at the time.

He passed the recipe on to his wife, Mayor Carolyn Goodman, and the dish became a family favorite known as “Mob Meatballs.”

Ingredients

1 pound ground sirloin

1 pound ground turkey

2 eggs

2 cups shredded Romano cheese

1 cup bread crumbs

Fresh chopped garlic, to taste

Pinch of garlic salt

Fresh chopped oregano, to taste

Fresh chopped parsley, to taste

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

1. Heat a frying pan over high heat.

2. Combine sirloin and turkey.

3. Beat eggs and add them to the meat mixture. Work together by hand, then add chopped garlic, oregano, parsley, garlic salt, salt, pepper, bread crumbs and cheese. Mix again by hand until consistent.

4. Roll out 1- to 2-inch meatballs.

5. Coat the bottom of the pan with olive oil. Place the meatballs in the pan, making sure to turn them so they brown evenly.

6. Once the meatballs are browned on all sides, remove them from the pan. Add your favorite store-bought or homemade marinara sauce, serve with your favorite pasta, and you have a meal people can’t refuse.
