Reno gun dealer pleads guilty to illegal firearm sales

RENO — The owner of a Reno shooting range faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges that he illegally sold handguns and machine guns with obliterated serial numbers to undercover agents.

James Harwin, a federally licensed firearm dealer, was indicted last summer after ATF agents launched an investigation in March when he was selling weapons at a gun show at the Reno Convention Center.

The agents said Harwin later sold them a Street Sweeper shotgun and three machine guns, and grinded the serial number off one of the guns in their presence.

Hawin pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of illegal transfer of a firearm. In addition to prison, he faces fines up to $250,000 at his May 4 sentencing before U.S. District Judge Miranda Du.
