The grand opening of SLS Las Vegas on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, on the Strip.

Less than six months after opening, the Griddle Cafe at SLS will close this weekend. A new 24-hour diner, Northside Cafe, will take its place starting Feb. 1.

The new restaurant will be modeled after classic Las Vegas coffee shops and will serve homestyle comfort food.

The Griddle Cafe opened in August as one of several popular Los Angeles-based establishments to expand to Las Vegas with the SLS brand.

But the eatery’s decadent, oversized griddle offerings that have made it an L.A. mainstay for 15 years couldn’t combat flagging business in Las Vegas.

The formerly 24/7 restaurant reduced its hours in October, and owner and founder Jodi Hortze made the decision last year to close the restaurant at SLS. Its last day of operation is Saturday.

“The unilateral decision to close The Griddle Cafe at SLS was a difficult one, but ultimately my focus is on growing the brand in new markets,” Hortze said in a statement. “Being part of SLS was a great learning experience, one I will always have with me.”

SLS President and COO Scott Kreeger said, “We experienced great success with The Griddle Cafe and wish Jodi only the best as she grows her incredible brand in new locations. With Northside Cafe, we’ve created a casual 24-hour dining concept that will serve as a gathering spot for locals and guests in the heart of our property.”

The closure is the latest in a series of bumps in the road that SLS has faced since opening in August.

In October, the resort announced that it was laying off 2 percent of its workforce after evaluating business needs. Later that month, the resort announced the departure of President and Chief Operating Officer Rob Oseland.

In November, SLS closed its buffet.
