Unsafe lane change led to officer-involved crash on I-15, officials say

Officials are searching for a four-door, possibly green sedan in connection with a crash that injured a veteran North Las Vegas Police officer Monday night.

The 45-year-old male officer was driving a motorcycle south on Interstate 15 near the Washington Avenue off-ramp when an unknown passenger car made an unsafe lane change about 8:30 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The southbound car entered in front of the officer, causing the policeman to brake heavily, the patrol said.

The motorcycle spun, and the officer was ejected before the motorcycle hit a concrete barrier, officials said.

The car, which initially stopped on the off-ramp, fled the scene, officials said.

The officer was transported to University Medical Center with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

He is an 18-year veteran of the North Las Vegas Police Department.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said weather may have been a factor.

The National Weather Service says a light rain was falling about the same time in the Las Vegas area.

Anyone with additional information on the crash can call the NHP investigator at 702-432-5293.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
