Rep. Dina Titus accuses GOP of ‘declaring war on immigrants’

Updated Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015 | 4:52 p.m.

Accusing Republicans of “declaring war on immigrants,” U.S. Rep. Dina Titus took to the House floor today to blast Attorney General Adam Laxalt’s go-it-alone plan to join a lawsuit to overturn President Barack Obama’s deportation deferral program.

She also criticized House Republicans for voting to eliminate the president’s two executive actions granting relief to millions of undocumented immigrants. One was announced in 2012 and benefits people who entered the country as children, and the other was announced in November and benefits parents of children living legally in the U.S.

“What...is the real reason for declaring war on immigrants? Could it be that they want to keep a desperate underclass to fill those low-wage, no-benefit jobs? Or is it because of some fear that these folks might become citizens and vote them out of office?” Titus said. “Regardless of the reason, these modern-day know-nothings should be ashamed of themselves.”

A spokeswoman for Laxalt's office said he was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.
