Violent crime in the Las Vegas Valley inched up in the first half of 2014 while property crimes dropped, according to preliminary semiannual FBI statistics released today.

Here’s what the new data show:

The rate of violent crimes was up by 12 percent for the two reporting agencies in Southern Nevada — Metro Police and the Henderson Police Department.

About 365 incidents occurred for every 100,000 people in 2014.

Overall, about 6,500 violent crimes were reported between both agencies. Aggravated assaults, which were up by 436 incidents, accounted for the biggest jump.

The North Las Vegas Police Department, the valley’s third largest agency, didn’t report crime statistics.

Property crimes were down.

There were 1,463 property crimes reported for every 100,000 people during the first half of 2013 — that number dropped by 32 percent in 2014.

Larcenies had the biggest drop across property crime categories, with 713 fewer incidents in 2014.

Both agencies individually had higher violent crime rates. But while property crime rose for Henderson, it dipped for Metro, leading to the valleywide reduction in that category.

Metro, whose jurisdiction of 1.5 million people is more than five times bigger than that of Henderson’s, accounted for the drop in property crimes.

Henderson had 20 more property crimes in 2014, while Metro had 102 fewer.
