Letter to the Editor:

Franchise doesn’t belong in Las Vegas

Regarding the proposed soccer stadium in Symphony Park close to the Smith Center: One can only hope the movers and shakers of the corporate world who decide on cities to be included in an expansion franchise will see the sheer folly of choosing Las Vegas as a viable choice.

There are many reasons Las Vegas would be a bad choice, but two stand out clearly: First, the $60 million taxpayer share is less than half of the proposed cost of $200 million. Second, “futbol,” which soccer is called around the world, simply does not have the sports charisma in the U.S. it does just about everywhere else — most sports fans do not have the necessary level of interest it takes to support a major-league team.

A more logical project would be a stadium on the UNLV campus, an imaginative design for which would include a venue for civic and cultural programs as well as home-team football.
