Organizers say volunteers are still needed for next week's eighth annual effort to count every person living on the streets in and around Las Vegas.

The Southern Nevada Homeless Census is scheduled overnight next Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning.

Clark County Social Service chief Timothy Burch says people with cars are particularly needed to shuttle teams from deployment centers in Las Vegas and Henderson to places where people are living.

The 2014 homeless census found more than 9,400 homeless people staying in shelters or on the streets.

That was up 28 percent from 2013, when 7,355 people were counted.

More than 13,000 were tallied in January 2009.

The data is used to qualify for federal grants for homeless programs.
