Plane safely returns to Las Vegas after smoke alarm sounds

Updated Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015 | 12:51 p.m.

An Allegiant Air plane carrying 160 people made an emergency landing this morning in Las Vegas after a smoke alarm sounded aboard the aircraft.

The alarm went off shortly after Allegiant Flight 536 departed McCarran International Airport at 8:30 a.m. for Great Falls, Mont.

Airport spokeswoman Christine Crews said the pilot turned back to McCarran International Airport and safely landed the MD-80 jet.

Rescue crews didn’t find smoke or any other safety risks, she said.

Allegiant spokeswoman Laura Billiter said maintenance crews were trying to determine what triggered the alarm.

Passengers switched to another aircraft that left for Great Falls about 11 a.m.
