Most of low-performing schools mentioned in Sandoval speech are from CCSD

State education officials have released a list of underperforming schools, and more than half of them are in Clark County.

The list from the Nevada Department of Education tallies every school in the state that is currently scoring poorly on student achievement metrics.

A total of 78 schools have made the list, with 49 of them being from Clark County.

The list was released a day after Gov. Brian Sandoval's State of the State address, in which he announced his support for the creation of a special "achievement school district." If established by the Legislature, the district would temporarily take over a number of the schools to improve their performance.

"Many have been failing for more than a decade," Sandoval said in his speech. "We must draw a line in the sand and say no more."

Sandoval said he supported ousted Washoe County Superintendent Pedro Martinez to head the district.

"If operational by school year 2016-17, the achievement district could manage a number of the 78 schools we are identifying today," state Superintendent Dale Erquiaga said in a statement.

"I am saddened to release the attached list of underperforming schools, but the Department of Education shares the governor's commitment to supporting the next generation of Nevadans," he said.

Martinez is expected to begin meetings with Education Department staff from next week.
