Sun Standout: Alize Jones

A short video profile on Bishop Gorman High School's Alize Jones.

Bishop Gorman High tight end Alize Jones had been committed to the UCLA football program since November 2013. He has family in the Los Angeles area and always thought highly of the school.

But tight ends are underused in the UCLA offense — a major red flag for Jones, who is considered as the nation’s top tight end recruit for the class of 2015.

At Notre Dame, it’s a different story.

Notre Dame tight ends, such as Kyle Rudolph, Tyler Eifert and Anthony Fasano, thrive in the Irish’s pro-style offense and then are drafted into the NFL.

That’s part of the reason Jones flipped his verbal commitment today from UCLA to Notre Dame. The other: Nicco Fertitta, his Gorman teammate and close friend, is committed to Notre Dame and has been aggressively recruiting Jones.

Jones caught 41 passes for 930 yards and 13 touchdowns last fall to help Gorman win its sixth straight state championship. His announcement was expected.

“I am officially decommitting from UCLA,” Jones posted on Twitter. “Thank you to the coaches and all the fans for your love and support! God has another plan for me!”

Verbal commitments are nonbinding and don’t become official until an athlete signs a letter of intent on signing day. Signing day is Feb. 4.

Until then, college coaches will be working overtime to recruit players, including Jones. Coaches from Michigan’s new staff have already inquired and planned to visit Jones this week at Gorman.
